Wesak

This holiday (also Vesakha, Vesak, Wesak Visakah or written) commemorates the birth, enlightenment and taking in the perfect liberation (Parinibbana) of Shakyamuni Buddha more than 2,500 years, northern India. In the Buddhist countries of Asia is the Vesakh Festival is the largest and most important event of the year and will be festively celebrated for centuries.

In 2000, the Vesakh Festival was recognized by the UN as an official worldwide holiday. The deadline was set to the first full moon in May. The Full Moon symbolizes the enlightenment.

Since then, many Buddhist communities in Germany are celebrating on this day, or real time on a weekend. There are many other Buddhist holidays, but vary from tradition to tradition and from country to country.
